    The Scarlet Diaries: Meet Sylas

Legend calls him many things...Berserker King. Vampire. The Wolf of the North.

Of the four Darkborn, Sylas Von Wolfsson lost the most. A family. His jarldom. His faith in his fellow Nordmen—even in the gods.

But the gods were far from finished with him.

“Why do you want me to lead your army?”

Hel smiles fully at that, baring unnaturally white teeth. “Because,” she says with far too much satisfaction. The hair rises on the back of my arms and neck in warning.

Arless takes a cautious step forward. “Because why?” she prompts.

Hel glances at her, Thorne, and Lucian before steadying her gaze on me. “You, Sylas Von Wolfsson, have the most to fight for.”

I don’t know what she means by that, exactly, but it’s only a matter of time before Hel grows weary of our questions and indentures us for eternity instead.

Cursing, I shake my head. “We will regret this.”

“Then—“ Thorne grips my shoulder in earnest, “we regret it together.”

Arless and Lucian both nod at me, the four of us resigned to our fates.

    - Bloodborn, Darkborn Saga Book one

Hel, goddess of death, remade the four with magic and brimstone, choosing Sylas to rise against the plague of invaders and protect the north.

They say he lost his soul the day he struck her bargain. That the runes marking his body—giving him preternatural powers—take a little of his soul after every battle. And that every time he feeds, his humanity is chipped away.

Sylas leads because he must. But the longer he holds that line, the more the darkness presses against it, whispering how much easier it would be to surrender.

    Winter 828

If the Darkborn could kill me, I think they might. My erratic feeding has taken its toll on the brotherhood. I know I am selfish, for my pain is theirs, and yet, I cannot bring myself to feed and fuck as they do, even if it means innocent life must be sacrificed to sate me. Something prevents it in my very core and as much as I want to give in and put us all out of our misery, I cannot. I have never loathed this life so much as I do now. It is misery. It is pain. And it is never ending. -S
